Spiritual direction is two people meeting together, seeking to hear God. Whether you’re in the middle of a personal crisis, a transition, stagnation, or even smooth sailing, spiritual direction can be especially helpful in drawing near to the Lord and inviting his presence and voice.
Unlike counseling or pastoral care which often focuses on problem solving, spiritual direction is a ministry of companionship, where together the trained director and directee are observing the Lord’s present actions and guiding invitations.
You and your director would set a time and plan to meet for one hour. The session begins with a few moments of quiet, and then your director might read a few verses of Scripture or pray as you both become aware of God’s nearness. When you’re ready, you can break the silence and begin sharing whatever the Holy Spirit brings to mind. The director will listen, and may reflect back what he or she hears, ask questions, or suggest pausing for a few moments to listen again for the Lord’s prompting. There is no judgment, no advice giving, no attempts to fix the situation shared. Rather, we ask God in his wisdom to guide us.
Sessions last an hour and occur monthly at the most. You may find you want to pursue spiritual direction for a season or just one time. No pressure to decide now.
