The ambition of Diotrephes led to his arrogance. John is exercising decrement in his critique of Diotrephes. People with seemingly noble intentions can, in reality, be evil. A simple question to ask yourself, "Does this smell like Jesus?". John gives a deceptively simple blessing: "Peace to you."
