During college, a buddy at Carolina used to tempt me away from studies by dangling a mountain bike ride in front of me. Not a hard sell. After riding for a while, we would stop to rest and read from a pocket Bible, and we would talk about life with God and our desire to know and serve him.

I am grateful to God for that time, partly because it was great bike riding! But the Lord also used those rides to show me that "Two are better than one...Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Eccl 4: 9,12) I realized from those times that following Jesus doesn't happen alone. We're made to follow him in community.

As I lead worship arts and small groups ministry at Apostles, my desire is for our church to experience that same reality of following Jesus in community.

Despite the occasional lure away from studies, I did graduate from UNC Chapel Hill in 1992 with a degree in journalism. My wife Robin and I then moved to Texas and spent eight years doing campus ministry at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Life in Lubbock included ministry with students and InterVarsity staff, as well as larger-than-life tumbleweed and some warm West Texas friendships.

We then moved back to Raleigh, and I joined the Church of the Apostles staff in February of 2002.

Things that quickly bring a smile to my face include my wife and daughters, live music, road and mountain bikes and food prepared to cause perspiration. I am grateful for God's call to serve at Apostles.
